Q: What is energy procurement and what does an energy broker do?

A:

Energy procurement is simply a method of controlling your contracts through intelligent energy purchasing. Energy brokers are experts in the energy procurement industry who help consumers and businesses get the most cost-effective or desirable deal on their electric and gas needs.

Q: Do I need to change my supplier?

A:

Many businesses aren’t getting the most out of their energy contract (and some don’t even realise) and taking the time to see what else is out there isn’t often a high priority. However, if the benefits were clearer and a specialist invested the effort, who would say no to a more complimentary deal? There’s always room for improvement.

Q: Why should I choose you?

Q: What do you need from me?

A:

To begin with, we’d need to see a copy of your gas or electricity bill so we can get an idea of your meter information. This way, we know what angle to go to energy suppliers from, what geographic location you are in, and what type of consumer you are.

Secondly, when youre happy with a quote and proposal, we'd need you to sign a Letter of Authority. This allows us to act on your behalf when negotiating with energy suppliers and changing contracts.

Q: How much do you charge/how do you get paid?

A:

As a broker, we feel that it’s most appropriate and beneficial to our customers to use a commission-based model to generate our earnings. Because the energy contracts we find and negotiate are so competitive, the final energy supplier is able to pay us a modest commission fee without compromising the great deal you receive. There are no additional costs for our brokerage services.

Q: What time do you feed the monkeys?

A:

Between 12 – 1pm. Make sure you’re there.

Q: What happens if I’m interested in renewing but I’m still under contract?

A:

If you’re still under contract with your existing provider then it depends on how long you’ve had the contract. If you’re still within your agreed contract duration then unfortunately there’s not much we can do unless you pay to get out – which we wouldn’t recommend. If you’re still within the ‘cooling-off period’ or on 'out of contract' rates, we may be able to help and can speak to your energy supplier on your behalf if you’d prefer.

Q: How is a new contract set up?

A:

After seeing your energy bills, understanding your needs, finding a contract, and receiving a signed Letter of Acceptance, we’ll send you a copy of your contract to sign with your new supplier. We’ll then go about terminating your old contract so we can set up your brand new one. We make sure to communicate every step of the way.

Q: How do you get more attractive deals than I could if I went directly to the supplier?

A:

The Energy Zoo has a rich background in energy efficiency, and we’ve had great relationships with energy suppliers for many years. This, along with our broker status, means that we have access to suppliers and deals that aren’t available to the public. Suppliers appreciate that we may bring many potential customers their way and so they offer great value, one-off deals to tempt potential customers away from other providers.

Q: What add-ons come with your procurement and are there any other services?

A:

We’re able to offer comprehensive packages to go along with your contract/provider switch.

  • Bill validation at the start of your Energy Zoo experience – we check all charges and taxes on your bill including CCL, VAT, FITs, unit rates and standing charges. We confirm our findings to you in writing
  • Energy-saving measures – we work with you throughout your contract length to help you reduce your consumption. No other broker does that as it reduces the total amount of commission we receive from your chosen energy supplier. We also offer, via our parent company, a huge range of energy-saving measures to make your premises and therefore your business, much more efficient and cost-effective. If you should choose, we can offer solid wall insulation, loft/room-in-roof insulation, cavity wall insulation, solar PV, solar thermal, ground source heat pumps, air source heat pumps, biomass boilers, flat roof insulation, under-floor insulation, replacement boilers, double-glazing upgrades, UVPC high-performance doors and draught-proofing
  • Energy generation – we can advise you with the Feed-in Tariff, which is a new scheme set up by the Government to encourage domestic and business users to generate their own energy from solar products and the Renewable Heat Incentive, which is another structure in place to reward those who switch to green heat, such as that created from biomass boilers. We can help you start on your journey into solar or biomass technology
  • Charity support – we donate £5 to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park Foundation's 'Project Polar' scheme for every new customer we secure

Q: How long is a giraffe’s neck?

A:

This varies, but they can get up to 2m (6ft 7in) in length – the majority of the animal's height!

Q: Which energy suppliers do you look at and why?

A:

We look at all the energy suppliers on the market. There’s more to energy than the big six! We don’t have ‘preferred’ suppliers or try to pretend that we don’t for that matter. It’s important to us that our customers know that they’ve received best possible deal from an honest broker. Our established relationships with all energy suppliers mean that no stone is left unturned when it comes to finding your next contract.

Q: Why can’t I do it myself?

A:

You can! It’s just that you won’t be able to find the same contract as we would, or get it for the same price as suppliers offer us better deals. It also takes quite a bit of time to complete as prices change every day, regardless of whether it’s done thoroughly or not.

Q: How can I be sure that you’re getting the best rate?

A:

As a broker, the Energy Zoo has the knowledge and the relationships with all suppliers to provide expert advice to those responsible for their company's energy. We also therefore have a lot of responsibility to ensure the market remains competitive through impartiality. We can make sure that you are paying the right taxes and have the right deal to suit your energy consumption. For example, you might be paying too high a rate for your energy base load, or be paying 20% VAT when you are entitled to pay just 5%.

Using an energy broker forces competition in the supplier market, which is one of the reasons why we look at every supplier. Energy suppliers offer us better contract prices compared to the prices offered directly to customers because they’re competing for customers. This competitive factor brings down the suppliers’ profit margins, and in turn, your business’s energy bills.

We treat your money as if it were our own, and you’ll see that when it comes to the deals we find. You’re free to gather quotes yourself to compare against ours if you like – in fact we’d encourage it.

Q: Will I be tied in to the Energy Zoo once I renew my contract through you?

A:

No, not at all. The contract you agree upon is with your chosen energy supplier, not us, so you’re free to say goodbye if you really want to (though we hope you don't). We help you get what you need and offer support throughout your contract term, too.

Q: My bills are very high – what can I do?

A:

There a few things you can try to reduce your energy bills. To begin with, we'd advise you to look at your energy tariff. Are you actually getting the most out of it? Do you use energy at the rate you expected? If there are any red flags that you'd like us to look at, or to analyse your contract full stop, we're here to lend a hand.

After this, we'd proabbly advise you to follow with energy reduction methods. We know better than most how to lower costs with insulation and renewable technologies. There are also ways to keep your business cool in the summer and warm in the winter. We can even arrange and carry out all the needed assessments and surveys.

Q: How do I know you can be trusted? There are some dubious-looking brokers out there...

A:

There are, and we go to great lengths to show our customers that we’re one of the good guys. Ofgem refer to these energy brokers as ‘rogues’ and unfortunately, malpractice takes place across all business sectors, for all sizes of consumer, and by all sizes of Third Party Intermediaries (TPIs). We make our practises clear from the word ‘go’, particularly by demonstrating responsibility and transparency about:

  • the commission we receive
  • our market interaction and impartiality towards energy suppliers
  • contracts being sorted by price, not commission
  • acting for customers only when we have authority to do so

Ofgem has started the process to cleanse the industry of such ‘rogue’ TPIs who are at risk of ruining it for everyone else.

Q: Where does my energy bill money go?

A:

These breakdowns are based on an estimate of costs at Ofgem's annual average consumption (3,300 kWh for standard-rate electricity and 16,500 kWh for mains gas).
